The America West Hockey League was formed in 1992, with the goal of offering Junior A Hockey in the Rocky Mountain region of USA Hockey. The league was originally named the American Frontier Hockey League. Its charter franchises included Billings (MT), Bismarck (ND), Casper and Jackson Hole (WY), Ogden (UT) and Pikes Peak, Pueblo and Vail (CO). The League matured over the next several seasons, and with its growth came a new name in 1998, the America West Hockey League.
